In the world of Minecraft, pigs are incredibly dense. The ham they drop is sufficiently dense in nutritional content that a few pieces can sustain the kind of metabolism needed to effortlessly carry around hundreds of cubic meters of solid iron.
Due to this incredible density, safety regulations require that pieces of ham must be stored sufficiently sparsely so that their gravitational pull does not cause them to collapse into a singularity. Any attempt to stack meat could endager us all.
Bread does not stack either, but this is not due to density. Rather, yeast is much more effective in Minecraft, causing each loaf of bread to be about 64 cubic meters. Unfortunately, it is impractical as a building material since monsters and wild animals will quickly consume it.
As for stacking soup, have you ever tried putting a bowl of soup on top of another bowl of soup in the real world? Don't bother trying, it mostly just makes a mess.
