AND THEN BANG IN COMES IN. WOBBLE WOBBLE WOBBLE WOBBLE
not srs, but funny.
.Every so often people ask us how we produce with a four-man team. Here is how the Showdown likes to throw down when we meet up:
-----
It is best if one person starts the tune and gets it to a jumping off point for the next person. This can either be solo and then brought to the table at a later date, or we could be physically together and just take turns at the computer. In this way it is like tag-team production.
"I laid down a couple ideas for melodies and some drums, why don't you take a crack at the bass lines and vocal choppies?"
Every so often we will stop and listen together so we can take notes about what needs to be done.
"Filter the snare rush in from bar 25-33"
"Make the sound at 0:55 even MOAR"
"Too many 16th note wobbles in a row around "2:20-2:30"
...etc. ad nauseum :P
Sometimes we are all in the same room at the same time saying ideas to the one behind the computer. This will work only until the producer-at-the-moment is focusing too hard to pay attention to all the words being tossed around. This is why taking notes is super important!
Once we are happy with the structure of the tune and how all the parts in it go, we will dive into the mixdown. This is another session of taking notes together on levels and eq, followed by the execution of those notes.
At this point, if anybody has any final edits they wish to add they will just do it. If it works it stays, and if it doesn't it's out.
Throughout this entire process, we use a naming convention on all of our files so that it is easy to go back to an old idea if things change around too much :
"Helicopter Showdown - Some Fresh New Tuna_001"
Every few edits or so we will Save As and add one to the end and we will have the first version as well as "Helicopter Showdown - Some Fresh New Tuna_002". It is extremely rare that we actually lose an idea, all thanks to this system of saving every few edits.
-----
Hopefully this has helped provide some insight as to how to effectively produce tunes with what can sometimes feel like too many people to handle. Remember that not everyone has to have their hand in every part - that's the beauty of a band!
