Anatomical studies of the brain by Andreas Vesalius and Johannes Wepfer had been published at least a century before those of Willis, but Willis' contribution was hugely significant. Willis made wide-ranging original observations in several fields, but focused most of his attention on the study of the nervous system. He believed that by understanding anatomy, one could understand the three forms of soul — vital, rational and immortal. He thought that the immortal soul was only present in humans, whereas the vital and rational souls were present in both animals and humans. He studied and compared the nervous systems of many different organisms, and this approach probably contributed to his enormous success.
Another contributing factor might have been his teaching duties as the Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy. In this post, he constantly exposed his own theories and original observations to a thriving intellectual community. John Locke (1632–1704) took notes on these lectures. These notes, together with those of Lower, were the basis of Willis' Oxford Lectures, which were discovered and subsequently published by Dewhurst in 1980 (Ref. 9). So, Willis' teaching duties, combined with his research and clinical practice, provided a unique opportunity to produce immortal publications and disseminate his ideas to a readership beyond Oxford. His anatomical descriptions and clinical case presentations were detailed, succinct and well illustrated12. Originally contemplating a career in the church, Willis mastered Latin, which was the language of religious authority and political power13, 14. The fact that he chose to write in Latin reflects his deep religious beliefs and loyalty to the King.
