uhm... just because he hadn't slept doesn't make him mentally ill.
haha. he must have had some other shit going on, that got triggered by no sleep.
he could have just taken some medication for it.
I find it very hard to believe that any doctor would be so irrational and lock someone up for the lack of sleep.
